We have the first options to extend contracts..so I thought I'd raise a couple of questions here early and make sure everyone is on the same page:
1) You have a one time decision to extend a contract, adding $5 for every year? So Lester is $1 for me, if I extend him 3 years, he will be $16 for each of the next 3 years?
2) Then, if I want to buy him out after the 4th year, it's the full $16 and after the 5th, it is $8?
3) We only have options for one, two, or three year extensions, or can we go beyond 3 years?
4) If I decide to deal a guy after the season who is eligible to be extended, the new team can extend him, right? So say I decide to deal off Marmol to say Brian, Brian can extend him up to 3 years?
Also, ask your questions here about contracts. Better we get them out now since it will definitely affect trading.

To my knowledge and understanding...
1 ) yes, he would become $ 16 /3 2) yes, buyout is half for every year left on contract so $16 after 4 and $8 for the last ( 5th ) year 3) I thought 3 year was the max extention..could be wrong...maybe there is no max. Have to confirm with commish on that one...I think if you have the money and are crazy enough for example to give an extension like 6 years. That's a heck of a gamble. IF he turns out to be garbage after the 1st year of contract you are on the hook for all 5 following years..ouch. 4)I think you are right. Then that team can either extend him before the roster freeze or he goes back into the player pool.
You also have the option to give him a 1 year extension at the same price. After that he automatically goes back into the player pool.
Did I pass the quiz guys? How'd I do ?? :-)

I don't believe there is a maximum extension length. It isn't in our rules now, and if someone wants that to be put in play, it would need to be a rule change.
I don't see why you can't give a guy a 2 year extension. A 1 year extension would be at the same price (so Lester would be a dollar in the 4th year), but a 2 year extension would be at 2x$5=$10 more (so lester would be $11 for years 4 and 5). Yes you could buy him out after the 4th year if you wanted, the buyout rules are independant of how your player arrived at his current contract status.
This is my interpretation anyway.

Copy/Paste of the rules (found on the home page):
"A player's contract lasts three years with the fourth year being an option year for the franchise. This means that upon entering the fourth year of a player's contract:
1) The franchise owner has the choice of picking up the option on the contract for a fourth year at the same salary, after which the player will automatically re-enter the Regular phase of the draft.
2) The franchise owner has the choice of not picking up the option for a fourth year of the contract making that player a free agent. The player will then reenter the Regular phase of the draft.
3) The franchise owner has the option of guaranteeing the contract for additional years. Once the guaranteed contract expires the player automatically re-enters the Regular phase of the draft. The player's salary is increased by $5 for each year the length of the contract is extended starting with the option year."

One time decision...hm. ok. When during, say, the 3rd year, can an option (and guarantee) be announced? I imagine this could be anytime before the trading deadline or after the season is officially over?

I imagine this could be anytime before the trading deadline or after the season is officially over? I think to make things easier, everyone should wait until after the season to announce extensions. It would be annoying to keep track of that stuff during the season. I suspect we'll treat it the same way that the prospect/minors extensions are handled (ie we'll set a deadline in early 2011 for everyone to announce who they are extending and who they are cutting loose). Besides, there is NO advantage to extending a guy early, and there could be a disadvantage (ie if you extend a guy before the season is over and he suffers a major injury)
