hi Guys
It may well be too late to propose anything (and it may be a bad idea anyway) but I thought I'd fire this out there and get everyone's thoughts. If you've discussed this before I joined the league, I apologize.
Can teams offer to pick up salary in a deal? Let's take the following scenario.
I offer to deal Hideki Matsui at $27 to Brian for Luke Hochevar at $10. He likes it but doesn't want to take on the extra salary. Could I offer Brian the difference--$17--and make Hochevar a $27 player for a year while Matsui becomes a $10? Teams do this in MLB all the time.
Or I pay Brian $17 in salary, so his cap this year is $317 and mine is $283
Another variation would be to only allow this for players with equal years on their contract. They in essence are allowed to swap contracts. So similar scenario but Brian offers me Aramis Ramiriez at $38 for Litsch at $1. I would do it but I dont want the extra salary. So we agree that Litsch is now a $38 player and Aramis is a buck (or maybe even it out, Litsch is a $15 while Aramis is a $24, so we swap $14 in salary). The swap remains permanent (and definitely can affect whether you resign a guy after 3 years).
What does everyone think? First, is it allowable under the rules? If not, should it be? I'll post this to the website as well if it's better to take the conversation there.
Thanks
Doug (MoTown)

i think a contract is a contract and you cant change it....
if you want to take salary away for another team trade for players they are dropping....

I don't agree with either swapping of contracts or dealing salary in the method you proposed.
The way I have always dealt with dealing salary is to trade for some "Over- priced" drop able players on the other team to balance out the salary's. Or to make a trade more viable or appealing.
The other league I play in keep a running salary total... meaning... whatever you don't spend one you you can carry over into the next year. In that league we can trade money... Here money is only good for the one draft, then it is useless. So before a draft you could trade money but half way through the year the money you gained is gone because budgets are not carried over.
I feel that if one team wants to swallow some salary or loss some it has to be in the form of moving a player contract.
My 2 cents.

There are other ways to balance out a trade absent paying for a portion of someone's salary. Taking on overpaid players or players at the end of a contract are two ways to balance giving up an overpaid player; or conversely, giving up a prospect or a cheap player along with an overpaid player works. I'm not sure we need a rule when there are plenty of ways already in place to balance out a bad contract in a trade.
