hi Guys
It may well be too late to propose anything (and it may be a bad idea anyway) but I thought I'd fire this out there and get everyone's thoughts. If you've discussed this before I joined the league, I apologize.
Can teams offer to pick up salary in a deal? Let's take the following scenario.
I offer to deal Hideki Matsui at $27 to Brian for Luke Hochevar at $10. He likes it but doesn't want to take on the extra salary. Could I offer Brian the difference--$17--and make Hochevar a $27 player for a year while Matsui becomes a $10? Teams do this in MLB all the time.
Or I pay Brian $17 in salary, so his cap this year is $317 and mine is $283
Another variation would be to only allow this for players with equal years on their contract. They in essence are allowed to swap contracts. So similar scenario but Brian offers me Aramis Ramiriez at $38 for Litsch at $1. I would do it but I dont want the extra salary. So we agree that Litsch is now a $38 player and Aramis is a buck (or maybe even it out, Litsch is a $15 while Aramis is a $24, so we swap $14 in salary). The swap remains permanent (and definitely can affect whether you resign a guy after 3 years).
What does everyone think? First, is it allowable under the rules? If not, should it be? I'll post this to the website as well if it's better to take the conversation there.
Thanks
Doug (MoTown)
