Clarification of buying out a contract

I just want to make sure I am clear on this before we get to the offseason.

If I have a player who, for conversation sake, has a contract of $6 and has 2 years left on that contract and I buy him out, is it a one time hit to my cap of $6?

Yes. You pay him 1/2 his salary for the #years left in his contract. @ years remaining at $3 =$6 total.

A 1 year contact would have been only $3 to drop.
