Pardon my double post from the EJMA board, but I know there are BLBers who are not EJMAers..
OK fellas, while we wind down the season and start up the playoffs, I've decided to take on the question, who was the best team of the 1980s. Thanks to Brian Geisel, I am now introduced to Replay Baseball. I'm going to use this product and a recently purchased "Teams of the 80s" set to hold a huge tournament throughout the offseason to determine the best team of the decade of my youth and some incredible memories.
I've divided the teams into groups to play round-robin in order to seed them (I've decided not to seed them based on record). Then, the 20 teams will play an NCAA style tournament, single elimination, but each matchup is a best of 7. Since 5th starters were still a bit of a luxury in the 1980s, I'll use the top 4 starters only, but of course with injuries.
Here are the teams competing:
1980: NY Yankees, KC Royals, Philadelphia Phillies
1981: Montreal Expos
1982: Milwaukee Brewers, Atlanta Braves
1983: Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles
1984: Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs, SD Padres
1985: St Louis Cardinals
1986: NY Mets, Boston Red Sox, California Angels, Houston Astros
1987: Minnesota Twins
1988: Oakland As, LA Dodgers
1989: SF Giants
So who ya got in this tourney (I'll continually post results on the EJMA bulletin board--www.ejmabaseball.com). Think Doc, Straw, and Nails have it? How about the Bash Brothers? Harvey's Wallbangers? Or my admittedly favorite team of all time, the 85 Redbirds? And if it comes down to it, should I pull Buckner for a defensive replacement?
